Matt grew up fishing California's central coast area from Morro Bay south to Santa Monica Bay with his father Skip. Matt and his father spent decades trolling for California Halibut and helped refine the "bounce-balling" techniques that have become so popular today...over 25 years after he bounced his first ball!

While Matt studied Marine fisheries at Humboldt State University, he began commercial hook-and-line fishing for California Halibut, White Seabass, and Thresher sharks along California's central coast to help pay for his tuition. This is when he first utilized the deadly shark trolling tactics described in Captain Fred Archer's books in the early 1990's.

Matt graduated from Humboldt State University in 1999 and spent the winter of 2000 on the Bering Sea monitoring the catch of commercial fishing vessels which targeted Crabs,, Pacific Cod, and Flatfish. After a winter on the Bering Sea Matt began to focus his career on research, monitoring, and restoration of salmonids and their habitats in Northern California.

Matt has been taking advantage of Captain Archer's techniques for over 15 years. You will won't catch Matt without multiple lures while on the troll! Matt's fishing partner, Chaco the chocolate labrador, is also a big fan of multiple lures! Tuna, sharks, salmon, and Pacific Halibut are Matt's favorite species to pursue.
